About 1 hour from the international airport and 5 km north of Ubud is the compound of Villa Naga. “Naga” means dragon, an auspicious sign of the Chinese zodiac. The house is designed by Dutch architect, Joost van Grieken using traditional Balinese and Javanese building materials in a very modern minimalist style. The house has been written up in a number of books and architectural magazines as part of the new Bali school of architecture. The long stretched piece of land gives far views over the Wos River – valley, is mainly facing the east, the direction of the sun and moonrise. His modern designed pavilions were completed in spring 2001 and consist the following:

The modern designed pavilions were completed in spring 2001 and consist the following. From the entrance pavilion a walkway leads through a lush garden to the central courtyard. Here is the access to main pavilion from where you can experience your first stunning views over the valley.

In this long-house style pavilion the open dining space is accommodated, together with 2 spacious bedrooms. In between the entrance from the gallery to the bedrooms is a private comfortable sitting area located.

Via the dining area, walking over stepping-stones of the main focus fishpond, one reaches the large living pavilion, where the kitchen and the staff quarters are housed. While traditional Balinese and Javanese materials are used throughout, the pavilions with the thatched roofs appear to be modern, so is most of the furniture.

By using limited selection of materials Joost enhances the simplicity and purity of the house.
Lombok grasses form the thatch of the roof, but bengkerai wood is used in the roof framework, as well as for all the door and window fittings, and the octagonal load bearing columns; the latter are supported by resilient Javanese white stone. All decorative and art works have been collected by the owner during trips all over Asia. The lighting in the pavilions and gardens create another serene atmosphere during the evenings.

In addition, custom made ivory and polished cement tiles make elegant statements in all pavilions, while the walls are either finished in cream-color sandstone or plastered and painted in Canton green or Tuscan terracotta. Each bedroom has a king size bed, a separate dressing area, a bathroom with an attached open outdoor patio with a freestanding bathtub and shower. Ceiling fans cool the 2 double bedrooms.

Nestled amidst lush, verdant plantation, surrounded by panoramic views of rice fields and secluded by coconut trees, the Villa KĀNTI experience immerses you in a soothing world of relaxation and tranquility that will revive and refresh your spirit as you enjoy the mystique of this spiritual land. Far from the bustle of daily Balinese life, Villa KĀNTI is situated on the edge of a quiet and small traditional Balinese village, located 10 minutes drive south from the center of Ubud.

From that first moment of entering the Villa KĀNTI and for the entire duration of your stay, you will be welcomed by the sound of water rippling down the cascades to the bottom of the plantation. Savor this view overlooking the garden from the highest point of the property – it is both magical and unforgettable.

Stroll through the gardens paved with special stepping stones, where water greets you everywhere – tropical ponds with delicate lotus and water lilies, reflecting ponds mirroring coconut and frangipani trees, and still water ponds nurturing goldfish and dragon fish and creating a natural environment for the local flora and fauna. Tropical flowers, shrubs and trees are swept in by the refreshing breeze where you will find a virtual celebration of nature and life. KĀNTI is the ‘Sanskrit’ word for “light” and the residence is bathed in natural light while protecting the privacy of our residents.

Built in perfect harmony with traditional Balinese architecture and integrating the most contemporary concept of outdoor living, Villa KĀNTI offers to fulfill the most discerning traveler’s dreams of luxury existence in a tropical country.

Villa KĀNTI provides a well-balanced blend of air-conditioned comfort and tropical open-air living. With [six –five?] pavilions established on 3200 sq meters of land, it comfortably accommodates up to ten guests who would still be able to lose sight of each other within the boundaries of privacy that the pavilions offer. The focal point of the property is the open-air living and dining pavilion, which drops down onto the 20 x 4 meters lap swimming pool filled with salt-treated water. This infinity pool is complemented by a ‘Hammam’ (steam room) and Jacuzzi just beside it. At the lowest reaches of this abode, overlooking more rice fields, a meditation Bale located over a quietly gurgling stream that marks the edge of the property will wait for you for a few moments of seclusion, meditation, relaxation or for a massage session.

For those moments where you might like to remind yourself of ‘civilization’, there is a fully air-conditioned Media & Entertainment room with a spectacularly large screen – 67 inch satellite TV, home theater with an extensive DVD collection of international movies and music. On the mezzanine level above the open-air living and dining pavilion, a desk provides a PC with internet connection and a printer for your convenience.

All corners of the villa are decorated with a plethora of antiques, crafts and artifacts from the Indonesian islands – Java, Borneo, Sulawesi, Lombok, Sumba, the Moluccas, Irian Jaya and Bali itself. These decorative and contemplative pieces, which have been collected over the years by the villa’s owners, who themselves live in the property when it is unoccupied, further enrich the discreetly cultural yet meditative atmosphere of the house.

During your stay, you will be serviced by ten staff who will offer you the highest level of personal service while providing absolute discretion and privacy. They will be at your service to ensure your stay is one of total relaxation and comfort.

h3 class=”int”>The Pavilions

Villa KĀNTI sleeps a total of 10 guests in 5 spacious suites located in three of the pavilions. The main pavilion, the Living and Dining Pavilion is connected to the kitchen on the side of the property by a soaring “alang alang” (thatched) roof and carefully landscaped terrazzo and walkways from special stepping stones (pebble washed) to the three suite pavilions – the Master Pavilion, the Temple Pavilion and the Ricefield Pavilion. Each pavilion offers panoramic views to the verdant rice fields beyond.

h3 class=”int”>The Master Pavilion

This is a two-storey pavilion located at the top-end of the property and contains a bedroom suite on each floor, identical in size.

The spacious ground floor bedroom has a creamy terrazzo floor and is decorated with Antique Chinese pottery from Sumatra Island and artifacts from Bali. The king-sized bed is canopied with a white mosquito net; a long writing table and a comfortable [reclining] sofa face a private garden; and heavy purple curtains with blackout lining provide complete darkness. The remote controlled air-conditioning can be individually adjusted to suit your own requirements.

The outdoor ensuite bathroom, with a soaking bathtub built from green stone, huge rain-head shower and tropical plant-filled garden allows you complete privacy in the open area. An antique Balinese door provides access from the bathroom to the private garden.

The upper floor bedroom was specially designed to enjoy the surrounding natural environment in its entirety. Sliding louvered glass window cover three of the bedroom’s walls, allowing a clean refreshing breeze to circulate through the room as well as providing breathtaking panoramic views of the garden, the terraces and the rice paddies, all of which can be enjoyed even from the bed itself . The furniture is in old teak wood with beautiful traditional carved panels from Madura Island used as a spacious wardrobe; the queen-size bed is surrounded by a white organza mosquito net’ the white bed linens and curtains add to the romantic and colonial flavor of the room. By design, this suite has a ceiling fan instead of air-conditioning, thereby allowing our guests to enjoy the pristine yet aromatic air. The bathroom has a ‘built-in’ soaking terrazzo bath tub, huge rain-head shower with pebbled flooring and overlooks the terraced rice field.

The window above the head bed where wooden shelves for some artifacts are placed is covered with a clear glass where you can see the rice field behind the villa with lots of coconut trees at both side.

h3 class=”int”>The Ricefield Pavilion

A one bedroom pavilion with king size bed, decorated with mix artifacts from the islands of Indonesia and in shades of white color for the room linen. The tropical plants that surround this pavilion give a total privacy. The open bathroom is particularly large with huge rain-head shower located under the tree. The stunning wall carving depicting the procession of a temple ceremony is in front of black terrazzo of vanity counter and soaking bath tub also in dark terrazzo with white ‘palimanan’ stone topping.

Villa Alamanda, situated 8 minutes south-east of the cultural town of Ubud, is approached through the traditional Balinese woodcarvers’ village of Tengkulak. Perched high on a ridge above the Petanu River, across the forest canopy, the graceful architecture blends contemporary elegance with ethnic charm. Designed to harmonise with the environment, this exclusive villa comfortably sleeps up to eight people in four stylish and spacious air-conditioned bedrooms, each with an en-suite bathroom.

Elegant teak furniture is complemented by clean lines, natural colours and local artwork. A sizeable, open-air lounge and dining terrace overhangs the jungle, creating a real feeling of space. Villa Alamanda presents tropical living at its best.

The property is built on the side of a hill; the living area and bedrooms are all on the same level with steps leading down into the garden. A large gate opens onto a paved parking area, where indigenous ‘serai’ stone walls are complemented with timeworn statues. These jovial characters greet the guests as they step into the cool interior of the villa through a set of antique double doors. Inside, the hallway extends towards a T-shaped wooden terrace. Furnished with antiques, this breezy open-air living area runs the length of the house and boasts a delightful dining section that juts out over the tranquil gardens as they tumble into the steep ravine. The back garden is laid out with the overhanging frangipani and three mulberry root loungers to provide a gracious resting area.

The lower garden and pool area provide the perfect spot for relaxation. The garden is equipped with a large bale with plenty of space to stretch out and enjoy the afternoons in luxurious style. The garden area is large enough for children to play or for you to entertain friends. At night, the house, gardens, soaring forest and pool area are lit up by a festival of lights, presenting guests with a dramatic sense of serenity.

Villa Alamanda Accommodations

Each of the four bedrooms features red-hued hardwood floor, double sliding glass and louvre doors that open onto the terrace, en-suite bathroom and fitted wardrobes.

The ‘Master Bedroom’ is furnished in a contemporary style, enhanced by a bell jar ceiling lantern, Indonesian artefacts and paintings by local artists. Louvre doors lead into a dressing room, fitted with a chunky marble washbasin and teak cabinets and adjacent to the bathroom, with its marble bathtub and shower. The glassless windows in the bathroom allow the cool breezes to permeate, and provide lovely views of the main garden area and swimming pool bordering the river valley.

The ‘Red Room’ is characterised by red accessories such as the lamps and paintings; and the ‘Cinnamon Room’ by the spicy-scented cinnamon stick arrangement in the vase above the bed. Both of these bedrooms feature a private garden bathroom with a marble bathtub surrounded by walls and leafy shrubs.

A separate thatched pavilion houses the ‘Garden Suite’, a cosy bedroom that also doubles as air-conditioned lounge containing shelves of DVDs and books. The Garden Suite features an en-suite garden bathroom with a canopied bathtub.

A fully-equipped kitchen is behind the Garden Suite and is accessible from the car-parking area. There is so much attention to detail; even the water tower is decorated with fanciful carved flowers, dragonflies and birds.

An arched gateway with rustic Balinese doors marks the entrance to the beautiful garden, accessed by a dramatic flight of seventeen stone steps leading down from the car-park level. The garden is shaded by verdant jungle foliage and filled with an abundance of brightly colored, sweet-scented tropical flowers and plants. A gnarled frangipani tree overhangs the enticing swimming pool; the water appears to cascade over the curved infinity edge into the backdrop of banana plants, bamboo, and towering coconut palms. A large relaxation gazebo, known as a ‘Bale Bengong’, is situated next to the pool and offers the comfort of cushioned daybeds. Sun-loungers are positioned on the white Palimanan stone patio; hand-carved paras stone statues and garden lamps create a romantic ambiance. The constant sound of the fast flowing Petanu River, as it carves its way through the steep gorge below, is accompanied by the melody of birdsong and cicadas.

Villa Alamanda is an ideal choice for those looking for modern luxury in peaceful surroundings; an enchanting retreat where guests can enjoy a relaxing experience with personalised service.

Villa Alamanda Location

Villa Alamanda is located in Ubud.

One hour’s drive from Ngurah Rai international airport, Ubud is Bali’s centre for fine arts, dance and music; while the surrounding villages are home to Bali’s most accomplished painters, dancers, musicians and carvers. This remarkable town is encompassed by magnificent terraced rice fields, rivers, traditional villages, art and craft communities, ancient temples and palaces. It is located 300 metres above sea level in the foothills of the central mountain range; this gives it a fresher, more pleasant climate than the southern coastal regions.

The numerous art galleries in Ubud feature traditional and modern work; the museums showcase the island’s rich history, and the shops and the market stalls sell handicrafts, jewellery, woodcarvings, textiles, paintings and antiques. There are many, well-presented, cultural performances staged in the town, in particular the Hindu epic, the Ramayana; also the Kecak dance, the fire dance, the monkey dance and the Legong dance. The countryside around Ubud is particularly beautiful, with an abundance of trails offering memorable walks through the peaceful rice fields.

Villa Awang-Awang Ubud can be translated as “floating in the space between heaven and earth” – the perfect description for this beautiful villa perched on the edge of a gorge with breathtaking views of the sacred Petanu River and lush tropical forest.

Villa Awang-Awang Ubud Location

Situated in the cool highlands 5 kms from Ubud, famous for its fine art galleries, restaurants and rich cultural life, the villa is a 50 minute drive from the air-port. The ten minute drive from Ubud meanders through stunning scenery of lush rice-fields, mountains and the sacred volcano Gunung Agung towering in the distance.

Villa Awang-Awang Ubud

The house was designed by the Balinese architect Ir. Ida Bagus Wiadnyana according to ancient traditions with the correct alignments toward the holy mountain.
Traditional materials are used throughout to harmonize with the environment – alang-alang thatched roofing, hand-made terracotta floor tiles, stone and marble, all crafted by local artists. The house is cooled by fans and natural cross breezes over water gardens.

Entry is via the traditional Balinese gate-way protected by stone guardians. The stone pathway lined with heliconia, orchids, gingers and frangipani leads through tranquil lotus and water-lily filled fish ponds. Antique Javanese doors open onto the large main living area with a soaring alang-alang roof and spectacular views from the open terrace.

Villa Awang-Awang Ubud Bedrooms

Antique Javanese doors open from the living room to three bedrooms. The main bedroom contains a queen-sized bed made from old teak-wood and an antique batik table.
A dressing room leads to the marble bathroom with a large terrazzo bath-tub and the outdoor shower area with a hand-carved stone mural. The second bedroom has an antique Javanese queen –sized bed while the third contains two single beds. A large terrazzo and marble bathroom with a deep tub, outdoor shower and double vanity is shared between the 2 rooms.

Villa Awang-Awang Ubud Lower Level

Stairs lead down to the open dining area with its spectacular views across the lush valley and the sounds of the flowing river below. The dining table is constructed from sections of an antique Javanese house and comfortably seats up to 10.

The kitchen has granite bench tops and is well-equipped with a refrigerator, oven, gas cook-top and modern appliances and utensils.

Antique Javanese doors lead to the fourth bedroom which contains a queen-sized bed and a marble/terrazzo en-suite. Sliding glass doors open to the terrace.

Villa Awang-Awang Ubud Bottom Level

Steps lead down to the sun deck, pool shower and the infinity edge swimming pool with its stunning backdrop of tropical forest.

Villa Awang-Awang Ubud Furnishings

The house contains many unique pieces of antique furniture from Java and Lombok and is decorated with traditional weavings, carvings, statues, and antique shadow puppets. There is a television, CD player, VCR, DVD, and a collection of CD’s and books.
